Year 5 River Study - Hamsterley Forest

Year 5 visited Hamsterley Forest as part of their Rivers geography unit to carry out some field work. In the morning, we looked at the features of a river as we walked through the forest. In groups, the children carried out a field sketch and created a river depth profile. In pairs, Year 5 created a model river using natural resources in the environment. The children were using the vocabulary that they had been learning at school, such as meandering and river bank.
In the afternoon, the children took part in ‘kick sampling’ to look for river mini beasts, which was very successful! Their last task of the day was to work in teams to build a raft. Before we left, the children tested their rafts by dropping them from a small bridge above Bedburn Beck.
