PE and School Sports Vision Statement 

It is our vision that all of our children will leave Greenside Primary School physically literate and with the knowledge, skills and motivation necessary to equip them for a healthy lifestyle and lifelong participation in physical activity and sport.

This strategy aims to engage all children in high quality physical education, physical activity and school sports as part of their school life and kick-start healthy active lifestyles for children and families within the school community.

PE and sport have an important role to play in raising standards and narrowing the achievement gap. Research has shown how placing PE and sport at the heart of a broad and balanced curriculum can improve attendance, behaviour and attainment. PE and sport build self-esteem, teamwork and leadership skills. They are also important because they can help build an inclusive society, raise levels of participation in sport after young people leave school and positively affect the health of the nation.

What is the Sport Premium?

For a number of years, the government has provided funding to schools to improve the provision of physical education and sport in primary schools. The funding is ring-fenced and, therefore, can only be spent on provision of PE and sport in schools. The funding each school receives is linked to the number of primary aged children between the ages of 5 and 11 years.

Purpose of Sport Premium

Schools must spend this additional funding on IMPROVING their provision of PE and sport, yet each school has the freedom to choose how to do this and examples of effective use of PE and sport funding have been identified by Ofsted.

In 2023-24, the school received £17,480 Sports Premium funding.

How will we spend our premium at Greenside?

Upon completion of the PE and School Sport audit this year, key targets have been set in order to develop and sustain high quality sport and physical education. Our objectives are to:

  • provide high quality PE lessons for each pupil for at least two hours per week;
  • increase confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in the teaching of PE and sport;
  • increase participation in competitive sport and opportunities to progress;
  • provide rich and varied opportunities for children to engage in at least 30 minutes of physical activity per day in addition to timetabled PE lessons;
  • provide a broad experience of a range of activities and sports;
  • raise the profile of PE and sport across school as part of whole school improvement;
  • kick start a healthy and active lifestyle for all children and families.

Greenside Impact of the Primary PE and Sport Premium 2023-24

School Swimming

We place high value on supporting our children to develop swimming skills. Our Year 4 children are taught to swim by specialist swimming teachers at Blaydon Leisure Pool. Year 4 attend once a week for the full academic year and are supported to reach (and in some cases exceed) the recommended government guidelines. Any children who do not reach this standard by the end of Year 4 continue with swimming lessons as they move into upper KS2. In Year 6, our children return to the pool for an assessment session to ensure they are secure with their skills and still able to reach the expected standard. Any children who need to boost their skills receive additional swimming sessions until they regain the standard.
