Year 1 Beamish Museum

In history this term, Year 1 children have been learning about what life was like for their grandparents and great grandparents. As part of this topic, we visited the new 1950s village at Beamish Museum.

We set off by coach on a rather gloomy morning but that didn’t stop us having fun! First, we hopped on a bus from the 1920s and made our way to the new 1950s town. This was a very bumpy journey! When we arrived at the 1950s town, we spent time exploring Elizabeth’s hairdressers, John’s cafe and Middleton’s fish and chip shop. We then visited No.2 Front Street which was the home of Norman Cornish, a famous artist from Spennymoor. We enjoyed handling artefacts and spotting the household objects we had been looking at in school.

After a tasty packed lunch, we spent time visiting the police house and semi- detected houses from Sunderland. We got to see what domestic life was like for a constable and sergeant during the 1950s. The children were shocked to find the television only had two channels!

It was a great day had by all. Thank you to everyone involved.
